YLPA receive high marks

With tired legs and red hands from intense practice Y.L.P.A (Young Ladies of Positive Action) contributed many hours of their time rehearsing for a contest they recently performed in, placing second out of nine competing schools.

Step allows for girls to express themselves while working hard and making new friends. With nearly 15 girls on the team, not everyone gets a position stepping, however, there are other parts to the team.

“What I enjoy about stepping is the different girls in the organization,”  junior Sara Torres said. “They make it fun because they all have enthusiastic personalities.”

The team practices Tuesdays – Fridays and sometimes on Saturdays. This particular show was in celebration of Black History month.

Team leader senior Khloe O’Gilvie believes this show is important because, “it represents how much work we [the team] put into our performance, and is a reflection of what we can do.”

Overall, the young women on the step team foster feelings of comradery and sisterhood.

“Step gives me an adrenaline rush,” freshman Kendall O’Gilvie said. “When I step, I know I can be hard and put everything I have into it.”

Last Thursday, the step show was held in honor of Black History month at Lone Star College.

“For any girls that want to try out for the team, even if you don’t think you’ll make it, still try out,” junior Toni Ricks said. “It can embrace parts of yourself you never knew you had.”
