October has a lot of important things going on, such as Halloween and our hometown Astros hoping to repeat a championship run in playoff baseball. October also marks the month of Breast Cancer awareness. Every October, there is a shirt fundraiser led by the cheerleading team to help raise money to donate to a Breast Cancer organization.
“We are donating the money raised to the Susan G. Komen for the Cure organization,” Head Cheerleading Coach Ashley Kowalczyk said.
The shirts bought by cheerleaders and students are worn at the Pink-Out themed football game.
“I have yet to run the final report to see what it’ll be after taxes and stuff, but it‘ll be somewhere around $600,” Kowalczyk said.
However, this game was more than just against another team; it was against a disease.
Senior football player Julian Espinoza has experience with loved ones fighting cancer. His two cousins, Alex and Kique, both beat cancer.
“I had family members that have gone through and fought the battle against cancer,” Espinoza said. “Seeing that struggle firsthand makes wearing pink during the game in support for breast cancer so much more meaningful and impactful because I know the hardship it can bring upon a family.”
Parents, students, players, and even trainers on the sidelines wore pink during the game in support of fighting cancer.
“It’s amazing to see that not just am I in support of their battle, but the whole community around me is as well,” Espinoza said. “It shows the kindness and beautiful heart that we have as more than just a school.”
