Senior night is always emotional, but wrestling did something to make senior night an even harder pill to swallow. On the night of the 11th, the varsity wrestling team honored their seniors and dueled it out against Bridgeland High School on the main stage in the auditorium.
The seniors that were honored were Angel Botello, Chris Aziz, Elijah Lunsford, Evan Sebesta, Isabella Mayorga, LeBron Tah, Melanie Alvarez, Patrick Tah, Ufuoma Abel, Eli Esquival, and Adrian Padilla.
“I want to try and give a good match for everyone to see,” senior captain Eli Esquival said. “I want to show that Langham has a good wrestling team and that we are all family.”
Both of Esquivals’ wishes came true that night, with both the varsity boys and girls team beating the Bears. In Esquivals’ match, he received a tech fall, meaning that he was leading by 15 points and the match was called. Esquival also continued his perfect record at home duels.
Esquival is wrapping up his successful wrestling career.
“I am a two-time State Qualifier and have been on varsity since freshman year,” Esquival said.
On top of that, Esquival is one of two seniors on the team with 100 wins. The other senior with 100 wins is also captain Evan Sebesta.
Sebesta’s 100th win was achieved earlier this season, and his road to 100 wins was a very bumpy one. Sebesta wrestled his freshman year, in which he only won 1 of his 18 matches.
“I’m not nearly the same person I was freshman year,” Sebesta said. “Lots of losing weight, and I did not see myself being this competitive.”
Sebesta has come a long way since his freshman season and hopes to leave the younger wrestlers in good hands.
“I want the freshmen to have some inspiration or role model,” Sebesta said.
