Tyler Chapa warms up at fall pep rally during 7th period.

As he gets ready for school following his daily routine of shaving, brushing his teeth and packing his cheerleader uniform for practice, it’s clear Tyler Chapa is no ordinary sophomore. He is the first male cheerleader in our school’s history.

Chapa is expected to perform like the other cheerleaders, he goes to practices, games, and pep rallies. The difference between Chapa and others is his uniform and lack of pom-poms.

“It’s an honor since we haven’t had a male cheerleader before,” Chapa said.

Chapa’s achievement is hoped to encourage other boys interested in cheer have the confidence to try out and help get rid of the idea that male students can’t do cheer.

“He sets an example and may help encourage other boys to try out,” junior cheerleader Dylan Teeters said.
