Are you an artist who wants to meet friends with similar interests while enhancing your skills and earning community service hours? Join the National Art Honor Society!
“National Art Honor Society is a club that engages individuals with their art passions, including writing, photography, drawing, painting, and even sculpting,” NAHS President Katelinn Barnes said. “We have big communities, competitions, scholarships, and numerous different opportunities students can take advantage of in NAHS.”
Barnes’s profound love towards art led her to apply for president of NAHS after two years of membership in the club.
“I’ve been drawing and painting ever since I was literally born,” Barnes said. “I was coming out of the womb with a palette and paintbrush, so I felt that if I had experience leading people already, why not do it within my own passions as well?”
Unlike other honor societies, the doors to NAHS are open to anyone who has demonstrated a passion for art by taking an art class in high school.
“Most honor societies are really exclusive towards 11th and 12th graders, but we’re more merit-based on your art level, so if you have already taken an art class, you can be in this art honor society,” Barnes said. “Anyone with a love for art is able to get in as long as they are passing their classes.”
NAHS is committed to “building an art community in which people are more interactive with each other.”
“In past years, I was really shy and it was only until last year that people started coming up to me in their art club,” Barnes said. “If I can make a more inclusive community with people interested in different types of art, whether it’s just history-based, or drawing, painting, sculpting, or even photography, the diverse cultures of arts coming together and interacting with each other, that is what I really want to see.”
An organization promoting “art, community, and fun,” NAHS has much to offer to all who decide to join.
“Not only do you get to meet other artists and grow your skills, whether it’s from constructive criticism, ideas, and opening your eyes to multiple different forms of art, you can also gain new friends, get scholarships, go to competitions, and get help with those as well,” Barnes said.
NAHS will meet every third Thursday of the month after school in room 1812.
