HOSA held its first Pie Time fundraiser at the Homecoming Parking Lot Party on Wednesday, September 25.
“Our new sponsor, Ms. Abrams, brought the idea over from her previous school, and with a little collaboration from the HOSA officers, got it approved for the hoco pep rally,” HOSA President Alyssa Vanportfleet said.
The candidates for the pieing were Dr. Martinez, Coach Rangel, and Mr. Tsai.
“We chose faculty that were well-known among the student body to encourage people to vote more,” Vanportfleet said.
Students were encouraged to purchase votes for the faculty member they wanted to see get pied by Larry the Lobo.
“[The funds go] towards paying for our competition events!” Vanportfleet said. “Entering competitions has a fee and we would like to alleviate the fee for the members.”
Pie Time was promoted through announcements, posters, online posts, and word of mouth in the excitement of homecoming preparations.
“I think with our limited time it went pretty well,” Vanportfleet said. “I just regret not being able to have everyone watch it and get a good view of the event they had paid to see.”
The school mascot was the chosen one to perform the pieing.
“I was so excited,” Larry the Lobo said. “And I made sure to ask if I was throwing the pie or if I was smashing it so I could drag it across their hair.”
Larry’s popularity among the student body was evident as she visited with different booths and students during the party.
“It was just a blast going around and saying hi to all the groups and taking pictures with everybody at the pep rally,” Larry the Lobo said.
While HOSA will not host another event like Pie Time this year, there are hopes that this exciting fundraiser will return again in the future.
“10/10 experience, definitely recommend y’all do it again next year, even though I won’t be here,” Larry the Lobo said.
