A new automotive teacher is revving up excitement in the classroom. Combining both education and innovation, Mr. Jonathan Couch has brought a new exciting opportunity for his students.
As a teacher, engine mechanic, and competition engine builder, Couch opened up his own auto shop in 2005. His work soon caught the attention of local Youtuber ‘Grassroots NASCAR’, who became a loyal customer. After working on several cars to great satisfaction, Couch asked if he could have his students restore a car. Grassroots was more than happy to allow LCHS students to restore the car and possibly be in a video.
“Once they found out they were going to be part of the action they were very happy,” Couch said.
Though working on a NASCAR initially sparked hesitation, students were enthusiastic to work. Having such a cool project has ‘engaged students’ and caused ‘much excitement’ among the class.
“I feel very lucky to be able to work on one,” senior Nicolas Galicia said. “I feel like it’s an opportunity many people don’t get. I am just thankful to have that experience.”
Students usually work on normal, everyday cars, so working on a race car was a big deal to them. This caused students to give their best efforts and learn new skills.
“I learned how to set up an ignition system. That was the biggest part that I’ve learned about that car,” Galicia said. “ I was very amused by its suspension geometry and how it was all custom. That’s what stood out to me the most when I first saw it in person.”
The project had specific requirements working on the NASCAR that differ from regular shop jobs.
“Our task was to install the two ignition boxes, build them back into the wiring harness in the car and route everything for function,” Couch said. “Then we had to test fire the engine and get it running for the first time.”
Once the engine roared to life, the students were astounded. Not only was this a spectacular experience for students, but it was a wonderful learning opportunity.
“If anyone wants to be in automotive, I recommend it. Especially Langham, the teachers really do care,” Galicia said. “They’re probably the best ones in the district.”
Students experienced working on a different car than they’re used to. They had fixed the NASCAR. This newfound energy sets the stage for what is next.
“For me it’s just another race car but to them it meant the world” Couch said.
