Many clubs are offered throughout Cypress-Fairbanks Schools. However, students are often occupied with other commitments and have little to no time to enjoy being in a community with each other.
Usually clubs require a certain amount of hours or you get booted, which may cause pressure to stay in the club. However, the new Learn and Lead Club has no hour requirements and works around students’ schedules.
“Our mission is just to help ourselves by helping others in the sense that seeing how much of an impact that simple acts of service can do can impact the lives of others,” President and Founder Lily Malloy said. “And just generally make our own experience at Langham more positive and worthwhile.”
Inspired by her past experiences of always playing ‘catch up’ on homework due to athletics, Malloy had the idea to help others who are struggling with something similar. Malloy then created Learn and Lead and while the club is still relatively new, they have around 16 members so far. Between the members, they offer tutoring in subjects such as Med Term, Algebra, English, History and Sciences. The team is still deciding what other subjects they may offer their services for.
“As a rule, tutors must maintain an 80 or above in the subject they’re tutoring,” Outreach Coordinator Kaiden Living said.
Tutors do get to choose which subject they want to tutor in. However, their grades must reflect that they have a decent amount of knowledge on the subject. There are other requirements as well, such as “willingness to adhere to bylaws and no disciplinary issues”. The club has many benefits for those who decide to join and tutor others.
“Club members can use the hours they get through Learn and Lead towards hours necessary for other clubs and honor societies [like NHS],” Malloy said. “And make a lasting impact on the people around them, get more involved in our heavily diverse community and develop as a person.”
Not only does increasing the tutoring life in our district help those being tutored, but also the tutors themselves. Any questions or guidance the tutors need can talk to the tutoring coordinator, academic advisor or the club sponsor, Ms. Cantu.
If you wish to find a tutor, you can fill out the Google form in Schoology, contact the president or any officer.
