It’s officially the month of love, and as Valentine’s Day inches closer, so do preparations for the sweet holiday. While some people will be spending Valentine’s Day with their significant other, others (like me) will be at home with a box of chocolates and watching a sappy romance film. Whether you’re going out this Friday night or staying in, here are some of my favorite rom coms to get you in the Valentine spirit this year.
♡ To All The Boys I’ve Loved Before (2018)
In the midst of a fight, Kitty mails out her older sister Lara Jean’s most prized possession: five letters—one for each of the boys she’s ever loved. What’s next for Lara Jean is a rollercoaster of reunion, friendship, fake-dating, and love she didn’t know she would feel again. To All the Boys teaches us that love doesn’t always come in ways that we expect, and it is a swoon-worthy romance you’re sure to fall in love with.
♡ 27 Dresses (2008)
Jane Nichols has always been the bridesmaid, but never the bride. When her sister becomes engaged with the man she secretly loves, Jane is made the wedding planner and is conflicted between her love for weddings and arranging the marriage between her sister and crush; all the while, a reporter discovers Jane and is eager to cover her story to leave the bridal beat. This movie made me laugh out loud, become watery-eyed, and gasp at the screen in the span of two hours and is definitely one of my favorite rom coms of all time.
♡ 10 Things I Hate About You (1999)
This classic rom com follows the story of antisocial and intelligent Kat Stratford, who finds herself slowly falling for new student Patrick Verona after a scheme is carried out so her younger sister Bianca will be allowed to date since her overprotective father will only allow her to date once Kat does. With messy drama and romantic confessions, 10 Things I Hate About You is a must-watch for anyone who loves love.
♡ 13 Going on 30 (2004)
When we were younger, dreaming of being older and growing into adult features was a common desire. For 13-year-old Jenna Rink, her wish to be 30 actually comes true when magic dust falls on her from a dollhouse that best friend Matty made for her, and she is met with the harsh reality of adulthood and the realization that she is no longer friends with Matty. 13 Going on 30 emphasizes the importance of recognizing true friends and embracing childhood. The humor and relatability of a 13-year-old girl attempting to tackle adulthood is what makes this movie one of my favorite rom coms.
♡ My Best Friend’s Wedding (1997)
How far would you go for love? Jules Potter went as far as to try and break up her best friend’s wedding because of her secret love for him. My Best Friend’s Wedding perfectly encapsulates the pains of unrequited love and the line between love and doing the right thing. I love this movie because of the accurate depiction of someone who is so desperately in love that she will do anything to win over the other person without realizing that what she is doing might be wrong.
Of course, there are several more amazing rom coms that didn’t make the list, but these are just a few of my very favorites that I recommend checking out this Valentine’s Day. Whether you want to cry or laugh, these movies will give you the perfect blend of both.
