Prom is just over a month away, and seniors are hustling to get ready for the special night. From prom dress shopping to promposals, the dance we’ve all been waiting for will come before you know it.
“My favorite part about prom dress shopping was seeing how my body fit all the dresses and seeing how all the colors looked on me and kind of seeing my eyes light up whenever I tried on that one dress that stuck out to me,” senior Hayden Lohman said. “AKA, the dress that I have right now. It’s lavender.”
While prom dress shopping might seem like a milestone experience of senior year, sometimes the perfect gown can be found right at home or from an older relative.
“I didn’t really go shopping because I’m saving money,” senior Nhi Su said. “But it was just fun seeing my family’s reactions, like, yes, no, no, yes, that’s the one, all that.”
From posters and chocolates to handwritten letters and crochet flowers, the possibilities of a promposal are endless.
“My ideal promposal will be, he has a cute sign with something that I like, a little quote, maybe having to do with makeup or cheerleading,” Lohman said. “And then I would also have flowers and some lights and then my family would be out there taking photos.”
Su dreams of being asked to prom with a grand romantic gesture.
“I’m not picky, but if a romantic scenario came to my head,” Su said. “I would be walking out of school, right? And I hear a beep in the car. I open up my eyes to the distance. My dream date, holding a poster and his friend driving the car. And he’s like, ‘come to prom with me’ and I’m running to the car. ‘I will.’ And then we drive off in the distance.”
Several seniors will be heading to Galveston for prom house weekend, but Carter has a fun activity planned for the night.
“After prom, we’re gonna go to a hotel and my friends and I, we’re gonna play a murder mystery game in our dresses,” Carter said.
The prom theme this year is A Night in Venice, presenting opportunities for music, food, decorations, and more.
“I think the best part would probably be hanging out with my friends, like seeing other people, too,” Carter said. “Worst part is probably the music. Track record playing country music. I hope they do good with the theme too.”
An Italian-inspired cuisine might be one hopeful possibility.
“I want them to have cheese biscuits, something fancy to match with the theme,” Su said.
Su is excited to have fun with her friends but is not looking forward to foot pains by the end of the night.
“Good part would probably just be hanging out, living in the moment,” Su said. “Bad part is probably the feet. Everyone’s gonna smell and also it’s gonna hurt ‘cause we’re gonna be standing around and walking in heels.”
Despite seniors’ mixed opinions on prom, many are anticipating the rite of passage event to be surrounded by friends and fun.
“I think it’s gonna be a little bit boring when you actually get inside prom,” senior Katelinn Barnes said. But I think the experience of just wearing cute dresses and hanging out with your friends is better.”
