Homecoming night had just recently happened. This year’s homecoming was held on September 20, and the theme was A Night in Rio. Although homecoming is a very popular event among high school students, some students say it’s very 50/50. Some students may enjoy it, some may not like it, and some think that different things make the night special than the actual dance.
“Homecoming was a bit underwhelming,” junior Elisabeth Aceves said. “Which means fun but I expected more due to the hype from my friends. I’ve also been told it was dinner in other years.”
Many people are aware of how popular homecoming is, but due to prior experiences may not keep on going year after year due to disappointment with what they expected but didn’t get.
“I went to homecoming my sophomore and junior year,” senior Azucena Figueroa said. “Sophomore year was really great because I went with a huge group of friends and because I didn’t really know what to expect. For my junior year, I didn’t enjoy it, I only went with two girls and it was kind of the same thing.”
Meanwhile, some students had worse experiences with homecoming in the past but had a great time this year.
“I went to homecoming in the past and it was kind of bad,” junior Gabriel Morgan said. “This year I went with a great group of friends and had an awesome time. I loved this year’s homecoming theme and the music. I just think that everything else really depends on who you go with.”
Many students that attended thought that the decorations for the theme were done pretty well.
“I did enjoy the decor and theme,” Aceves said. “The entryway colors were inviting and welcoming, and the colors inside of the dance floor set up a great mood and I danced with my friends. I also loved the music, especially HOT TO GO!”
Some students made the most out of their special night by hanging out after the dance, creating a more exciting and memorable experience for themselves with whomever they chose to hang out with.
“I went with three of my friends,” Aceves said. “After homecoming, with the same group of friends,we walked to the Whataburger nearby in heels at night to eat and get a shake.”
Some students couldn’t really go anywhere due to mishaps during their night out.
“Overall, we had a great time,” Morgan said. “But one of my friends said he wasn’t feeling well, so he had to leave us.”
Although homecoming is a very popular highlight of many students’ high school career, some students think it’s not really about the event itself but who you’re surrounded by.
“I think your friends really carry the whole experience,” Figueroa said. “That’s why, as a senior, I recommend going with a bigger group of friends because I think it’s better than going with a few people.”
Even though homecoming may be a hit-or-miss experience for some students, many can agree that it is who you make your memories with that makes the night special.
