Winter Guard Competition Season
As marching season comes to an end Winter Guard season is ramping up and getting ready to go.
“We started our serious Winter Guard practice back in December, but our first competition was February 4th,” junior Mariah Duron said.
Their show is a mix of dancing, flag work, and riffles to convey the message of You Can’t Stop the Rain.
“Our theme this year is kind of like a rainy woman’s night on the town,” Duron said.
The girls go from one competition to the next showcasing their skills and watching other guards.
“Personally I enjoy watching other guards perform,” sophomore Olivia Hoppe said. “Something about performances indoors are just so much better, you can really see the detail in the flags and props.”
Many girls tell of the values they have learned from Winter Guard and the principles they are taught that apply to the real world.
“I don’t really care too much about winning,” junior soloist dancer Hannah Gee said. “As long as everyone has fun and enjoys doing it then I’m happy.”
Color Guard and Winter Guard often go under the radar and that leaves many of the members feeling underappreciated.
“I wish more girls knew about us,” Gee said. “I want the art to be more recognized and appreciated.”
The Winter Guards next contest performance will be February 25th at Tompkins High school.
