Cyress Canales Varsity Wrestling
A student athlete expresses himself by participating in what people say is Langham’s most contact sport, wrestling. With district only days away Cyress Canales’ goal is to make it to state this season.
Canales has wrestled for three years going on four for Langham’s varsity team and has other experiences with martial arts outside of school.
“I think no matter the experiences you have with wrestling, the unity we all share is explainable since we all work together even if we are all in different weight classes, this is really a sport that doesn’t bring us together as players but as a family. We go through the same things and I feel like that is what brings us closer together,” Canales said.
Some players join wrestling to try it out, others join because it’s a good self-defense sport. Most new wrestlers don’t know what they are capable of and in previous years made it to district, region and even state.
“I joined wrestling because it’s a contact sport, I just love the rush. Plus it’s a way to get my anger out and I really enjoy going to the matches and just being with the team since I’m doing what I enjoy and that’s why it’s very easy to bring home a win,” senior varsity wrestler Cyress Canales said.
For many people wrestling is a very contact sport and has a lot of preparation before season starts with no room to slack off. The Lobos head to their District meet at the Berry Center on February 9-10th.
