Last Theatre Competition
The lights gleamed over the dark auditorium as the stage was set, the props hastily put into place as an anxious audience gets their last bit of chatter out as they await the show. “I was really anxious, but I just focused on the show,” sophomore Katie Humphries said.
The Theatre Ensemble performed at District last week for their last contest of One Act Play, they did not advance. This is the first time in about ten years that Langham has advanced to this level of competition in the One Act Play UIL competition. They performed A Seeker in the Wings which is a relatively new play published in 2014 by Mary Zimmerman. The play consisted of a series of strange short stories based off of fairy tales. “It’s sort of like Beauty and the Beast, it shows that anyone can know what love is,” senior Prince Banks said.
This year there is a new theatre teacher, Mrs. Cross, who replaced Mrs. Renaue who left Langham Creek this year. “This is our first time with our new director, so we could never really lose focus,” junior Marianna Paz said.
They had been practicing this show for over a month in class and in lengthy after-school rehearsals. The original play was around two hours long and called for a much smaller cast but cuts had to be made to qualify for UIL. The final product ended up being less than 40 minutes long and had a cast of around 15 people.
“This is my final competition piece and I think I’m gonna leave on a strong note,” Banks said.
The next theatre performance will be their senior play the date of which will be announced later this year, this will be the Theatre’s last performance of the year.
