Coming To American Schools
Switching school’s can already be very difficult time. There are some students though that not only have to switch school’s but also countries as well. Foreign students come every year into this country and have to start their lives all over. Although it is a drastic change, they manage to make it a whole new experience of their own.
A lot of people come here to find opportunities or they are forced because certain situations. Whatever the case is the students are usually excited to come to the place with the American Dream.
“I came here because I wanted to learn to speak english, and with the situation in my country, I’m from Venezuela, it’s a bit difficult right now,” Virginia Rosales said. “I was very excited because this is what I had wanted for a very long time. It was something that I was planning.”
The NAC program for foreign students has helped people from different parts of the world come together to share their cultures. It eases students into our English academics and helps students facing similar situations relate to each other.
“The program NAC has been my best experience yet because I met a lot of people from different countries,” Regina Elizalde said. “And since it’s a change of cultures we can understand each other.”
Some of students are lucky enough to have already learned some of the language. Some countries even teach the basics of English to their students. There are times that it is difficult to translate everything into english. Houston comes with a great diversity so most of these students don’t have as much of a difficult time as someone would assume.
“We know the base of english,” Rosales said. “It hasn’t happened where someone has talked to me and I didn’t understand them or that I couldn’t respond.”
Everyone can agree that high school is not like they seem to make it out in the movies.
“It is completely different from the movies,” Elizalde said. “Though I’ve liked it here a lot. I thought it was going to be a lot more difficult. I would go back to my country just to visit but I would stay here,” Elizalde said. “In this country there a more opportunities and you can do a lot of stuff.”
