Meeting Principal Hughes

Most students don’t know Principal Hughes. They see him in the hallway and hear him on the morning announcements. There might be a face to the name, but for the most part, his story has been untold.

Until now.

Born to Welsh parents, he grew up in the small town of Chester, England. The picturesque walled city only served as his home for a short while. His family moved to Curacao, a Dutch protectorate in the Caribbean, for his father’s job. He learned Dutch there before moving again to Puerto Rico for his high school years.

“In high school, you make lots of friends. You will make others, but high school is where you can really make those life long friendships,” Hughes said.

Once he graduated high school, he decided to go back to England to attend university. He stayed there for his graduation and taught at a nearby school for 2 years. Unfortunately, a family issue pulled him away from England and to the U.S.

“I was teaching in England when my father became sick and eventually passed away,” Hughes said. “I as the older brother moved to Houston to be with my mother and younger brothers.”

He taught at Spring Wood for a few years before Langham Creek opened its doors to him, asking him to be the new soccer coach.

“Langham Creek was opening around 1984. It was a brand new school in Cy-Fair, so I applied for a position here,” Hughes said. “I was hired as the soccer and cross country coach. Actually, there’s a picture of me in the trophy case. Kids ask me: ‘Is that you?’ and I say: Yeah that’s me.”

He won an award in 2012 for his time coaching soccer. He was eventually inducted to the High School Soccer Hall of Fame, along with one of our current coaches: Coach Lane.

However, his first stay at Langham came to an end when he transferred to Cy-Falls to teach and coach for the next 11 years. He served in the administration of both Cy-Fair HS and Cy Ranch HS until an opportunity came up to serve as the principal of Langham.

Needless to say: he accepted.

“I came back,” Principal Hughes said. “And I was excited to go back to where I started my Cy-Fair career.”
