One Year On
It’s been one year since the election of the 45th president of the United States, Donald John Trump on November 8th 2016. His presidency so far has been rocked by controversies and protests.
“He’s done a lot of things that are controversial and I think people have the right to peacefully protest,” junior Philip Berger said.
His administration has seen various shifts throughout his short time in office. From replacing Sean Spicer with Sarah Sanders and removing a longtime campaign assistant Steve Bannon to adding his daughter and son-in-law to key positions.
Some of these promised policies have been implemented, like ending the Trans Pacific Partnership, a free trade deal involving the U.S., Canada, Malaysia, Vietnam, Peru and several other Pacific nations, notably excluding China.
Two policies in particular have been very controversial. His ban on Muslim immigrants and refugees from several Middle Eastern countries.
“I think America is made up of all types of people like there’s black people and gay people and Muslim people like me and I think he doesn’t want to see the big picture,” junior Iflah Khan said.
The other is his proposed border wall with Mexico, which has been a controversial staple policy of his administration since the republican primary.
“When it comes to the wall I don’t think it’s economically feasible. I think he shouldn’t have made that promise,” senior Tristan Weston said.
It has been one year since Trump got elected and there are still three more years for him and his cabinet to try and enact the vision of America they chase after.
