Chris ”Houdini” Herron
CJ Herron! Yes I said that right, Chris Herron the quarterback who started to get noticed when he took on the challenge of being the starting quarterback over 2 seniors last year. Nobody would’ve expected Chris Herron to be able to do what he did last year when he moved from wide receiver to quarterback in the middle of the season. His career as a Lobo seems to be going good for us outsiders, so people had to see from his perspective.
“My success mostly comes from being humble and continuing to keep working hard so I can reach my full potential,” Herron said.
CJ was a key receiver for Langham last year, he ended the season with 3 receiving touchdowns he had a lot of big plays at receiver. One game the Langham Creek offensive coaches changed the quarterback starter, against Cy Woods CJ was the starting quarterback and he led them to an 62-35 win, asking him what was it like moving from receiver to quarterback in the middle of the season last year it was difficult for him.
“Moving to quarterback from receiver there was a lot pressure on me as far as if I would able to keep the offense upbeat and exciting to watch and just being able to execute the offense like it should be,” Herron said.
When CJ switch to the quarterback role he started to get more notice for the good season he had. At the end of the season he started receiving offers but not just any offers, big time Division 1 schools has offered CJ like Baylor, UofH, Indiana, and Bowling Green. CJ doesn’t get big headed from all the offers he keeps working hard.
“Most of my offers came to me during the off season. After receiving my first one it made me keep working harder in order to receive more. After that I basically took off in the summer when more and more colleges began to notice me.” Herron said.
CJ is also known to play another sport called basketball. He is also on varsity for the Langham Creek basketball team. Will he be a 2 sport athlete in college or just stick to one? Which one does he like more?
“Ummmm wow, well football is my heart and soul, I breathe, eat, sleep football but i enjoy playing basketball at times just to take my mind off football so I mean it’s important to me but i will only play football in college, i’m not getting looked at for basketball.” Herron said.
Star footballs always get a lot of love especially for starting quarterbacks. For CJ to be a star quarterback and for all the fame he has, i just had to ask how is it like walking the halls of Langham Creek and does he get more attention now, and do the teachers and coaches expect more from him.
“I mean the quarterback brings a lot of attention tome but i kinda like being able to meet new people and just to show that i’m not just stuck up like most top athletes are. It also brings huge responsibility as far as leading the right way in the hallways but I like it a lot. The teachers and me coaches expects me to lead on and off the field and i see how it can affect the class in anyway, i mean it’s tough but but it’s all worth it.” Herron said.
There’s another Chris on the team and he’s the running back #21 “Beast Mode” aka Chris Mehn. He is one of CJ’s go to target and asking him how it’s like having CJ as a teammate, his response was straightforward.
“He’s the ideal teammate to have, to be honest. He’s funny, people gravitate towards him but he’s also a very hard worker. Extremely competitive.” Mehn said.
Us outsiders see what goes on with the football athletes from the outside looking in but we really don’t know how they are when they’re not in football mode, but Chris Mehn knows CJ better than us.
“Outside of football you wouldn’t really know he has all the attention he has. He laughs with everyone and doesn’t mind helping people and giving back to the community. You will never see CJ not smiling or mad or even being disrespectful, he even smiles on the field.” Mehn said.
Talking to a friend of CJ’s Oshoma Oshante, he speaks highly of him knows what CJ is capable of. Asking him how does he think CJ future will go was very understandable.
“I think his future will be very bright if he keeps staying on track and hang around then right people and keep God first. He’s a very good football player and i don’t see him stopping anytime soon, he’s only going to get better.” Oshante said.
Knowing that Langham Creek has a huge game coming up in the 4th round of the playoffs against the district champs Cy Fair i know it’s a lot of pressure on CJ and the whole football team but Oshoma thinks CJ will take them further than the 4th round.
“I think CJ can take them to the state game, the whole Langham Creek football team are playing at their best and CJ just makes better, there’s no doubt in mind on why they shouldn’t be going to the state game.” Oshante said.
CJ has an huge support system behind him, his dad Mr. Herron is his biggest fan and has seen him grow to become the football player he is today. Everybody has their own opinion on athletes but their dad may be the biggest critic in their lives, Mr. Herron doesn’t let up on CJ, asking everybody else how they see CJ as an football player isn’t anything compared to his dad.
“At first i didn’t know what sport he was actually good at, didn’t even know he was going to be successful as he is now. We just kept on working, late nights and early mornings he is now a good football player and knowing that he has 1 more year left in high school is scary for the opponents, he’s only getting better.” Mr. Herron said.
Athletes likes to be humble when they get their first offer but the people in their life acts like they won a billion dollars. CJ took advantage when he got his first offer and kept working harder, Mr. Herron knew it was going to come one day.
“It was coming one day, we were very happy when he got his first offer from Bowling Green. When he told me he got it, it was like all the stress went away and we got to rolling on the other offers.” Mr. Herron said
CJ Herron has a lot of supporters and everyone is believing in him and his team to get it all done and bring the state ring back to Langham Creek. It seems like CJ doesnt disappoint people on the field and off the field, the big question is, will he be the best quarterback to every play for Langham Creek?
