Fashion Design Talent
Sewing fabrics, hemming skirts and altering costumes are things that Maddy Sacco needs to do every week during the school year.
Sacco is a junior who makes multiple costumes for the cast members performing in theater productions. So far, she has prepared outfits for 4 shows, including Elephant’s Graveyard, Orphans, and Stuart Little.
“I have been sewing and doing theater since I was 9 years old and am also a part of the Fashion Design club,” Sacco said.
Sacco meets with the costume crew 3-5 days a week for a month to determine who will make what costume for the plays. More often than not, the team buys certain clothing items and simply adjusts the outfit to best match the character that the student will be portraying. However, there are some occasions when Sacco-and her classmates-Nicole Coronel, and Anna Schooley work with a separate designer to create a brand new costume.
“It’s hard to do costumes for theatre, you have to make costumes for the entire cast and sometimes that cast can be 30 people,“ Sacco said.
Surprisingly, Sacco thinks that she’s got it all under control. She has no problem designing and styling clothes every day.
“It’s not necessarily hard for me to juggle all of these activities and extracurriculars,” Sacco said. “It doesn’t take up too much of my time.”
The talented teenager is also in Fashion Design 2, an advanced block period class. She spends her time doing the thing she loves: sewing.
“So far, we made Halloween costumes, puppy dogs for families who lost someone in the Florida shooting, pillows and dresses this year,” Sacco said.
With hard work and determination, there will be nothing standing in Sacco’s way to a great career. With the amount of commitment she puts in all her work, her dream will definitely be accomplished in the future.
“I do hope to maybe be a fashion designer or costume designer someday. I do want to get that good at it,” Sacco said.
