Why Am I So Tired All The Time… High School Edition
You’re sitting in a silent math class during 1st period. You take a second to rest your eyes. Seems harmless enough, the next thing you know the bell is ringing, and you are up and out of the class. That night you get a text from your friend asking if you’re freaking out about the test as much as he/she is. You start to sweat, you slept through the entire review during class that day. You spend the next 2 hours cramming and stuffing as much information into your brain as fast as you can. This is why you’re tired.
According to a 2017 study by The National Sleep Foundation, the average American teen gets less than 7 hours of sleep, far from the recommended 8-10 hours.
You were bored and needed to fill some time. So, you fill it by being on Snapchat until 1:00 am in the morning. This is why you’re tired.
You were assigned a history project 3 weeks ago and procrastinated till the night before, so you do 3 weeks’ worth of research and work in one night. This is why you’re tired.
You just had to check your twitter feed 4 times right before you went to bed even though you had been on it 5 minutes ago. This is why you’re tired.
You absolutely had to make that 100th Spotify playlist that you’ll never listen to. This is why you’re tired.
You were desperate to finish binge watching your favorite Netflix show, so you stayed up and watched the last 3 episodes. This is why you’re tired.
You spend an extra hour at practice… running. This is why you’re tired.
You didn’t want to face your school problems, so you fall asleep at 3:00 right as you got home and wake up at 2:00 in the morning. This is why you’re tired.
You overslept and don’t take your routine “wake-up shower” as you rush to school. This is why you’re tired.
You’re watching the Astros play, and you say: “one more inning”, but the game goes into extra innings, and being the diehard fan that you are you watch the rest of it… all the way to the 14th inning. This is why you’re tired.
You’re in a fantasy football league with your friends, and your team is down by 10 points, so you stay up late to see if some unheard-of receiver can get you the win. This is why you’re tired. (He doesn’t by the way)
You go to the Thursday night Football game, but just had to go to Whataburger and hang out for a while. This is why you’re tired.
You’re in high school. That is why you’re tired.

I’m tired because after hours of football practice I still have to go home and do homework even though I’m exhautsed from practice

I agree with some points but it’s hard to balance 7 classes and extracurricular activities and have enough time to eat, shower, and sleep all in 24 hours.

Yep, there are some sacrifices that need to be made in order to obtain precious commodities such as sleep. Sleep is hard to get with the increasing workloads students get. If you master time management, you can do anything.

Big Mood. But it’s been studied that teens naturally stay up later on average. High schools should start later than say elementary schools. They can get more sleep, things done and function better in the morning.
