Varsity Track Races at Rice University
The Varsity track team travelled to Rice University to compete against highly competitive teams from across the area. Beginning Thursday, March 26th and continuing throughout Saturday, March 28th, varsity athletes traveled to Rice to prove their hard work to their coaches, teammates and college scouts.
“A lot of college scouts were there, a whole lot, I can’t even begin to name them,” Varsity girls coach Ellen Robinson said.
The presence of these college scouts are one of the factors that inspired the team to work as hard as they could during the season. However, this is not the only factor that contributed to their determination.
“Getting to compete against really good girls pushes me to do better, and the whole experience at a higher level is really interesting,” sophomore Janna Skinner said.
The team as a whole, impressed the coaches with their determination and improvement throughout the weekend. More specifically, Junior Courtney Faver placed 2nd in the girl’s high jump finals, junior Jeremy Gamble placed 4th in boy’s 100 meter dash finals, and junior Jordan Murray took 6th in boy’s long jump finals.
Many of the finalists proved how their long days of practice paid off.
“We always run more than what we actually run at the meets to prepare. At the meets you have more time in between the events, but during practice you have less time,” freshman Kaitlyn Clark said. “That teaches us how to push through exhaustion as track is mainly a mental sport.”
