The Oscars

Everything leading up to this year’s Academy Awards seemed to indicate a total trainwreck of a ceremony, from the Kevin Hart controversy that left the show hostless, the addition then redaction of the ‘Best Popular Film’ category, and the announcement that certain categories would be presented during commercial breaks which caused massive backlash, forcing the academy to make sure all awards were presented live.

Yet the ceremony itself went quite smoothly, only going about 15 minutes past it’s expected 3 hour run time. It had a nice swift pace that kept things to the point, even if there was a bump in the road in the form of an awkward acceptance speech or joke. History was made in several categories, with Roma being the first Mexican film to win Best Foreign Language Film, Spike Lee winning his first Oscar, and Ruth Carter & Hannah Beachler became the first African-American women to win Best Costume Design and Best Production Design, respectively.
