With the start of the Girls’ Soccer season right around the corner, players are stepping onto the field with confidence, higher standards and a sense of determination. Seniors Roxana Cruz and Cierra Walsh, both returning varsity players, say the energy this year already feels different, in the best way possible.
Cruz, a senior in her third year on Varsity, says being on the top squad comes with responsibility. As a varsity player, she knows younger teammates look up to her.
“You’re the role model for JV,” Cruz said. “It’s fun because you have more opportunities and it’s competitive.”
For her, this final season is both exciting and meaningful.
“It’s going to be fun and interesting. Since it’s my last year, I want it to be the best. There are new players, so it’s different than usual.”
The season officially begins on December 12, and Cruz believes the team is heading in the right direction. Compared to last year, she sees improvement already. Team chemistry has been strong during early practices, with players communicating well and supporting one another.
“Everyone talks with each other,” Cruz said. “There are no problems with anyone, it’s all lighthearted energy.”
She expects Cypress Woods to be their biggest competition, especially with one standout player she’s determined to beat. But the senior is also looking forward to the fun parts of the season, including team meals before games and the traditional team hangouts.
“It’s fun, bittersweet…I don’t know how I’m going to feel for my last game,” Cruz said.
Walsh is now entering her second year on Varsity, and agrees that expectations are higher at the varsity level. She says the team is held to a standard of consistency, fewer mistakes, and strong responsibility, even outside of school.
“We’re supposed to be role models for the other girls,” Walsh said. “We need everyone to work hard and stay committed.”
Still, her feelings about the upcoming season are very positive.
“I’m super excited for this upcoming season and extremely hopeful that we make it to the playoffs,” Walsh said.
Walsh expects the team to perform better this year due to a major shift in mindset.
“Our biggest problem last year was definitely attitude and effort,” Walsh said. “I think we’re coming into this season more motivated with a stronger attitude and more competition, so more effort.”
Even though formal practices haven’t begun, Walsh says team chemistry is off to a strong start and should only grow as they train together. Like Cruz, she predicts Cypress Woods will be their toughest matchup.
“They have skill, speed, strength, and they play well as a team,” Walsh said. “All around, they’re a solid team.”
As a senior, Walsh is most excited for the senior night tradition and making memories with friends on and off the field. After a season last year that fell short of expectations, she’s determined to help push the team forward.
“I’m disappointed we didn’t go to the playoffs,” Walsh said. “I hope I can improve individually and we can improve as a team this year.
With strong leadership, better chemistry, and motivation, the Lady Lobos are stepping into the season with optimism and a hunger to prove themselves. The countdown to kickoff has begun.
