Environmental science students created art for the SPLASH art competition, in which winners would have their art as signs placed on beaches along Galveston Island to encourage people not to pollute.
“It [the competition] brings awareness because it brings out how the littlest things that we do, such as leaving a piece of plastic out on the street, can cause a great impact on the environment,” sophomore Emily Fernandez said.
Junior Ellie Maung, who entered the competition, used a bird in her drawing to highlight how birds often get tangled in trash on beaches, showing in a sarcastic way how birds use it as a fashion statement.
Pollution is a major issue that many choose to ignore, which causes more harm not only to us, but also to the earth.
“We can put up more signs and also make social media posts to spread awareness,” senor Baothy Dinh said.
Competitions like these highlight the importance of how we view pollution and how we can combat the issues we face daily, showing that even the most creative ways can still make a difference in the fight against pollution.
