Students have just finished choosing their courses for the 2026-27 school year and submitted their course selection sheet. When deciding, students have to put a lot of thought into what classes they want to take and what classes they still want to keep.
“I chose Journalism because that’s what I wish for my major to be in college,” junior Victoria Sanchez said. “I also really wish to go to the University of Texas in Austin, they have a very good Journalism program there that can hopefully help me obtain my goals.”
Course selection can change over time throughout a student’s time in high school.
“One of my past electives was theatre,” junior Elisabeth Aceves said. “I didn’t really enjoy the acting perspective of theatre, so eventually changed to tech theatre. I like tech theatre, and find it akin to a passion.”
Students mainly pick classes that suit their best interests.
“Honestly, none of my classes tie closely to my major other than Aquatic Science, because I want to get an Anthrozoology degree or become a veterinarian,” junior Maya Hopper said. “I have turtles of my own, so I fell in love with taking care of sea animals and learning more about animals in general.”
Although course selection can change over time, many students have electives they are dedicated.
“I chose band because I’ve been in it for 3 years now,” junior Caden Lockett said. “I’ve been on trumpet for 8 years.”
Juniors who want to have any kind of early release for their senior year have to put in a lot of consideration into the classes they pick.
“I chose AP Physics I at the beginning but wanted AP Physics DC instead to make my college resume look better,” junior Dane Handley said. “I also wanted to be a student assistant at first, but then I replaced that because AP Physics is a block period. Also, I could have double early release because that’s something I really want.”
Every class teaches different skills that can help students with their career path.
“My favorite class right now is Intro to Cosmetology,” sophomore Luna Fuentes said. “It’s a class I have to take before taking Cosmetology I. It’s my favorite because it teaches me the basics: what I need to do and not do. It teaches me how to be a professional, how to communicate properly, how to interact with people I don’t know, and most importantly, about the beauty industry.”
In the end, it is clear that there is a long thought process that goes into course selection as it affects future goals and plans. The last day to submit the course selection sheet was on April 14th, and now it is only accessible in the parent portal login.
