The Bailadoras dance and drill team continues to be a strong symbol of unity, discipline, and school pride, bringing students together through performance and shared goals.
Founded in 1986 by Robin Cerny, the Bailadoras began with a set number of 46 dancers who performed together on the football field and competed against other schools. Since then, the team has continued to grow while maintaining its original values.
“Our main goal is to be united as one as we dance and to support each other and lift each other up,” senior Hailey Mouton said.
Preparation for performances and competitions requires consistent practice and dedication. The team practices Monday through Thursday, with occasional Saturday practices leading up to contests.
“It can be hard and the practices can be long, but we always strive to achieve our goals,” Mouton said. “We support each other and cheer each other on, and that strength helps us keep going.”
“The team’s mission focuses on growth both individually and collectively,” sophomore Kyle Pierson said. “Our team’s main goal is to grow personally and as a team.”
Many dancers believe what sets the Bailadoras apart from other teams is the strong bond they share.
“We’re all very close, so when we dance, you can tell,” Pierson said. “We’re just like a big family.”
Balancing academics with dance commitments can be challenging, but dancers say learning to separate the two helps them stay focused.
“When you get into practice, you leave academics the day before and focus on dance,” Pierson said. “Then after practice, you go back and focus on school.”
Mouton added that education is always a priority for the team.
“You always have to put priorities first,” Mouton said. “School comes first, and then in your free time you train and practice.”
The team has experienced success through competitions, but members say their proudest achievements go beyond trophies.
“Winning competitions is great, but seeing how far we’ve come in our skill level from the beginning to now is our proudest achievement,” Mouton said.
Teamwork plays a key role in the Bailadoras’ success, helping dancers stay organized and connected.
“It helps us mesh better together, and you can tell that when we dance,” Pierson said.
Decisions regarding themes, music, and styles are “typically made by the team’s directors and social officers, who brainstorm ideas and select what best represents the team.”
Looking ahead, the Bailadoras hope to continue pushing through the season while leaving a lasting impact.
“In the short term, it’s about giving our all at practice,” Pierson said. “In the long term, it’s about leaving a legacy and paving the way for future generations.”
As the season continues, the Bailadoras remain committed to maintaining the strong, united image that has defined the team for decades.
