The Hottest Class!
All jobs have some sort of training program, from accountant to police officer to movie producer; firefighters are no exception. the Lonestar Fire Academy gives five lucky students the ability to get invaluable training to become a firefighter, along with a certificate.
“This is really the first step for students who want to go into firefighting,” Mrs. Alam aid.
While this years forms and students have already been registered, the course will continue next year and they are looking to expand the program.
“Last year was the first year it was here, and there are five students who are selected from the district, so it’s a pretty exclusive program. They’re hoping to make it bigger,” Mrs. Alam said.
This program is primarily for students who wish to either go straight into firefighting or proceed with more Fire Academy training after high school.
“I’ve wanted to be a firefighter since sophomore year,” applicant junior Roota Mellow said.
There are many requirements for enrollment in the program. There is a mandatory background check, orientation meetings, physical requirements and you must currently be a junior that is eligible for early release.
“This program is off campus at Lonestar, so you need early release to be able to get there for the class,” Mrs. Alam said.
The program isn’t free, however. Tuition for in-district students costs $ 1,100 per semester, not including the cost of gear.
This years application process is over, but the program will continue to next year and the foreseeable future.
