Due to the hard work and determination of the wrestling team, the wrestling team will be competing for the title of District Champions. Eight schools from the district will be participating on February 4th and 5th for the same title. However, only one team will be able to claim this victory and progress to Regionals.

Both the male and female teams have practiced hard with their coaches, Jason Trahan and Pete Longoria, in order to perform to the best of their abilities this season. Out of fourteen matches, the wrestling team has won 13-2 dual record and placed 3rd in the state at the Dual State Tournament for the girls and 9-5 for the boys. As district approaches, the wrestling team prepares for their qualifying match, and the female competitors let us in on some of their secrets for a successful season. “This year I feel has been successful for both boys and girls. We’ve made a lot of progress and we’re having an amazing year,” Junior Daniela Commacho said. “It’s been a long but successful ride,” Alexa Garcia said.

Many of the female wrestlers have different ways of preparing for each match, some more serious than others. “To prepare for matches I try to motivate myself and build my confidence as I’m warming up,” junior Daniela Commacho said. Contrasting this method, Garcia said, “I bump to Future and Drake’s new album What a Time to Be Alive”. While this may not be the most traditional way to prepare for a wrestling match, what matters most is not the preparation for the match, but the match itself.

One of the determining factors in a successful team is their ability to cooperate with one another. However, it is when the team becomes a family that they truly win. “The Langham Creek Wrestling team is my family and I’m going to miss everyone that impacted my life throughout the season,” senior Taija Lawhorn said. However, it’s not just the teammates who are a part of this family. “We spend so much time together that it’s hard not to love them, including the coaches,” Daniela Commacho said.

Hopefully the long practices and the close family that the wrestling team has become will enable them to do well at the upcoming District meet.
