Prom is here and so too comes the prom court, where students vote for one another in various categories such as “best bromance,” “most artistic,” and, of course, who will be prom king and queen.
“They send out a vote to students, and students can nominate anybody they want,” Assistant Principal Tim Silvey said. “After the nominations go in, and then it’s changed to vote on people. It’s all done online. Nobody knows who anybody votes for, and people can only vote one time.”
Organizing prom, even to the smallest detail, takes a lot of coordination among the student body.
“There is a lot of work involved in prom, but at Langham Creek, the class officers make a lot of the decisions for prom,” Silvey said. “They decided what themes they want that the students vote on, and they meet with the planner to choose all the decorations; the students go and choose the food, they get tastings and things like that; they talk about the DJ, music so our students are much more involved and choose more what prom looks like here.”
Over the years, many past prom rituals have been left behind in the digital era.
“We used to have a photographer come, and now all of it’s digital,” Silvey said. “We’ve gone from having artists doing sketch art to kids just wanting to use their cell phones to take pictures.”
Despite this, the prom court has held throughout the years.
“It’s just a tradition that’s been done and we’ve never gone away from it,” Silvey said.
The voting session for prom court has been closed and results will be announced at prom around 10:00 PM.
