Girls Soccer Victory in Round 1 of Playoffs

Brandon Brown & Cameron Guzman-Keller

The girls soccer team clinched their spot in the second round of playoffs last Thursday at Cy-Falls. It was a hard fought game to the end, but the Lobos came up with a 2-0 victory against Westside High School and earned the title of bi-district champions.

“I’m very proud of our team,” head Coach Bueno said. “Westside kept fighting and never gave up which made our job difficult, so props to the girls and Coach Brown.”

Both our players and our coaches worked very hard to make it to postseason.

“It was a bit challenging with Spring Break in between, so when we got back, we took the time to get back into the rhythm,” Bueno said. “We knew we were playing at Cy-Falls, so I spoke with Coach Napier, and he was glad to let us borrow the stadium to practice.”

Various aspects of this game proved to be unique among the rest of the season. Before heading off, students, parents, and teachers gathered to show their support and cheered for the team as they walked to the bus.

“The send off was exciting and the girls loved it,” Bueno said. “It was a total surprise for them.”

Once at the field, the team saw the biggest crowd they had seen all season.

“All of the support means a lot,” defender Erin Kelley said. “I’ve never seen that many fans at a soccer game.”

The game was delayed about 15 minutes because one of the officials was stuck in traffic. Both teams were antsy and ready to play, but the girls had to stay focused. They used the extra time to calm their nerves and continue warming up.

When the game was finally underway, the girls had to play in some strong winds. These conditions made for some pretty exhausting playtime, but neither team let it phase them. In fact, forward Jade Dewbre scored a goal from almost 100 yards out.

“I was really shocked when it went in,” Dewbre said. “But it felt good to score and get the last goal of the game in.”

The girls really came out on top this season, finishing district 9-2-2. Everyone is very excited to moving on in postseason, as the girl’s soccer team has not made playoffs since 2012.

“It means a lot to me,” Dewbre said. “This win means we have the opportunity to show out as a team and continue to be successful.”

This week, the Lobos will face Cinco Ranch at Cinco Ranch at 7 p.m.

“Any game in playoffs will be tough,” Bueno said. “Every team has earned the right to fight for the grand prize, and we must be ready for that.”

The team deserves our school spirit, so come out Thursday night to support.

“We would like to thank everyone for their continuous support,” Bueno said. “See you all in the stands soon!”
