Water For The World

In any given high school, the typical day of a student consists of the struggle of rushing to class before they’re late. Halfway across the world in parts of Africa, the typical day of a person consists of the struggle of rushing to a clean water source before it dries up.

All year long Interact Club has been working towards battling these struggles one water well at a time.

“The Water Project is a non-profit [organization] that takes donations from different groups all over the world. Then they take that money and use it to construct wells. [Interact] is specifically looking at a well in sub-Saharan Africa,” Interact sponsor Kristen Williams said.

The group uses many methods in order to raise money for the cause. “My role is to promote the campaign as much as possible, which means going to bake sales and making posters to raise awareness for the lack of clean water in the world.” sophomore Kimmie Nguyen said.

The water project is being led by students in the club who were inspired by the sponsor and her experience in Africa.

“[The project] was conjured up specifically by our officers who really had a passion for having a lasting impact on an impoverished community,” Williams said. “I give feedback and advice when they need it, but it really is in the hands of the students.”

The water project, while student led, requires a lot more community involvement for the project to succeed.

“The Interact club has been taking the head on it, but we’ve also had involvement from student council,” Williams said. “We’ve had donations from people in the community. So it’s really a project that has had hundreds of people contributing.”

By the end of the year, interact will have completed their project and made their impact. “I think the Water Project is an incredible idea and positively impacts the lives of the helpers and receivers of this basic life necessity.” junior Daniela Camacho.
