This month, many music programs here hosted their annual winter concerts after months of preparation. Choir and orchestra had their concerts in the same week, but both of them are special in their own way. Choir had theirs on the 9th, and orchestra’s had theirs on the 11th. Additionally, choir’s concert ran from 7:00 PM to 9:30 PM, while orchestra’s ran from 6:30 PM to 7:45 PM. Both concerts were also free to attend.
“All our songs are special,” Head Choir Director Andrea Loer said. “Specifically, we have a very fun carol medley, a ton of songs that include percussion instruments, and a special version of The 12 Days of Christmas, arranged by this year’s Chamber Singers.”
Orchestra had also invited alumni to come back to attend the concerts. Wong states that she always hopes to invite alumni back for every winter concert. This year’s concert is the second annual one where they have invited them back.
“The oldest is from class of 1999 and the youngest is class of 2025,” Wong said. “We have an Orchestra Director from Kahla Middle School that will join us in the Alumni and a current teacher on campus that used to be an alumni. We also invite back the very first Langham Creek High School Orchestra director to direct a piece with the alumni and another orchestra director that used to work here.”
Choir had also invited alumni back; although they were not directly involved in the performance, the choir program had found a way to make them feel included as well.
“We don’t have any pieces that are officially sung by alumni,” Loer said. “But we welcome them on stage at the end of the concert to sing Silent Night with us.”
Both programs had been preparing ever since the fall, and they hoped that the songs they chose for their respective concert was special to everyone else just as it was to them.
“All our songs are special,” Loer said. “Specifically, we have a very fun carol medley, a ton of songs that include percussion instruments, and a special version of The 12 Days of Christmas, arranged by this year’s Chamber Singers.”
Orchestra purchases all their music, and they hope that the songs they chose were worth it. They are excited to see how they and the alumni perform.
“Orchestra will be playing Gauntlet, A Boomwhacker Christmas, Somewhere in my Memory, Christmas on the Thames, and Christmas Pipes,” Wong said. “The Alumni are playing A Hallelujah Chorus, Christmas Time is Here, A La Media Noche, and Trepak.”
Whether you chose to attend these concerts or not, there is no doubt that even though these concerts were hosted in the same week, they were fun and unique in their own way. Those of you who attended, hope you enjoyed what these amazing programs had to offer!
