Latin Club

Some may say that Latin is a dead language, but to the Latin Club it means far more than simply an ancient dialect. The club is often overlooked by those not enrolled in the class, but the Latin Club is actually a lot more fun and beneficial than the eye can see.

“Generally, we’re a group that likes to explore the more cultural, mythological and historical aspects of ancient Rome.” Said Chelsea Ayers, host of the Latin Club and the one Latin teacher here.

Many students don’t usually think about mythology and history when they think of Latin as a language, so they see no point in learning about it or joining the club. In reality, things are very different in the Latin Club.

“Latin is incredibly helpful for a variety of careers and futures. The most obvious is science and medicine; if you’re interested in going into one of those fields, Latin is hands down one of the most helpful things you can learn. Most of the terminology present in medicine and science are Latin. The same holds true for Law and Law Enforcement as well.” Said Ms. Ayers, matter-of-factly.

It doesn’t stop there, however, Latin can also assist students with aspirations for careers that don’t directly involve the language itself.

“If you’ve ever thought that architecture, archaeology, philosophy, history, politics or business might be fields you’re interested in, then good news! Latin and Roman culture has had a huge impact on all of those disciplines. And even if your field doesn’t really have anything to do with Latin, most prospective employers will give priority to applicants who have a background in Latin and the Classics (study of Roman and Greek history) because they know that the way classicists have been trained to think is incredibly helpful in a variety of environments.” Said Ms. Ayers.

But the Latin Club is not just all learning and no play, they enjoy the free time just as much as they do the intellectual conversations.

“We eat food, play games, watch movies and socialize. It’s super fun.” Said Ms. Ayers, when asked about the club activities. “It’s pretty dope, and I totally recommend it.” Said Kevin Huynh, a member of the Latin club and Latin 2 student.

In the end, there is so much more to learn and so much more fun to be had in the Latin Club!
